1 UPDATE SCHEDULE
USBBS is updated from entries subitted by callers throughout the
month. Only updates made to an official update point through the
indicated method can be assured to make the list if the board
qualifies.
The final update to USBBS is made on the last weekend of the
month before the edition month unless the first is on a weekend.
The list is usually available Sunday morning. I distribute it
personally to the distribution points sometime during Sunday.
2 AREA CODE CHANGE
I have changed appropriate 714 prefixes to 909 on the list. Thought
you might like to see why.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to:
ATTENTION to Details RyBBS BBS - 909/681-6221
5085 Trail Canyon Drive VOICE - 909/681-6210
Mira Loma, CA 91752-1685
An ASP-Approved BBS
for supplying this information.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The 909 Area Code Started 11/14/92 in Southern California. The change
affects Riverside, San Bernardino and Eastern Los Angeles counties.
Population and technology growth has used up most 714 numbers.
The split - which brings to a record 13 the number of area codes
serving California - is necessary due to population growth and to the
proliferation of pagers, car phones, modems, fax machines, and
automated teller machines. <<and supposedly bulletin boards!>>
FOR THE NEXT NINE MONTHS, customers seeking to reach phone numbers
covered by the new area code can dial either 909 or 714. But after
August 14, 1993, the new area code must be dialed or a recorded
message will be heard instructing the caller to redial using the
proper area code.
Among the cities covered by the 909 code - in addition to Riverside,
San Bernardino, and Pomona - are Diamond Bar, San Dimas, Ontario,
Claremont, Big Bear Lake, Beaumont, Hemet, Colton, Walnut, Corona, and
Temecula.
The 714 area code will continue to serve Orange County, the
communities of Carbon Canyon and Sleepy Hollow in southwestern San
Bernardino County and parts of La Mirada in Los Angeles County.
Palm Springs, Needles, and other communities in eastern Riverside and
San Bernardino counties will remain in the 619 area code.
3 FILES
The following files are included in the USBBSxxx.ZIP archive:
USBBSxxx.LST The list itself.
USBBSxxx.TXT Distribution and Update points for the USBBS
list.
Eventually, there will be 4-5 update points --
one in each geographic part of the country. The
distribution points for the list are boards that
I personally upload the list to shortly after it
is updated.
This file will be included with each edition of
the list.
USBBSxxx.NWS You're looking at this file. It will be included
periodically as there is information to pass on
about the list.
4 LIST CHANGES WITH EDITION 105
The following modem information will be displayed for new and
updated board starting with edition 105 of USBBS. The field will
be in columns 50-53 in the following format:
mMxx
m = Minimum speed
M = Maximum speed
0 = 300
1 = 1200
2 = 2400
9 = 9600 and greater
xx = Modulation type(s):
V = V.32 or V.32bis
U = USRobotics HST
D = USRobotics Dual Standard (V32 and HST)
H = Hayes VSM
B = Hayes Ultra (V32 and VSM)
O = Other proprietary method
These modulation indicators will appear for those boards
supporting 9600 baud or greater maximum rates. As additional
modulation types are added, we will consider them for their own
letters.
These features appear to be the most important for a caller to
determine if they can connect with a board. Higher baud rate
claims (e.g. greater than 9600) depend so much on manufacturer,
modulation, and settings of both the calling modem and BBS modem
that 9600 will continue to be the maximum entry.
The entry will support two modulation types so boards which
support different types on multiple lines can indicate this.
These changes will be made in edition 105 of the list to allow
door authors time to accommodate them. Your comments are
appreciated. Please leave them to "SYSOP" on BOBsBBS
(916-929-7511).
5 BOARDS REMOVED (USBBSxxx.DEL)
Each month I find out about boards which are down for one reason
or another. I simply delete these boards from the list. Is
there any value of moving them to another file (USBBSxxx.DEL) for
a couple of months so they don't just disappear?
The file would be included with every edition. I would keep them
on this file with the date removed from the list for a couple of
months. Thus if they were removed in error, I can be notified
and they can be replaced.
If I do not hear from you, I will continue to remove the boards
without additional notification. Please leave comments at
BOBsBBS (916-929-7511) or on Compuserve (ID 72240,2230) via Mail
or in the IBMBBS Forum.
6 THANKS TO A LONG-TIME USBBS FRIEND
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+
! ! ! ! ! SPECIAL NOTE ! ! ! ! !
+-----------------------------------------------------------------+

UPDATES ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTED AT COMPUTER CONNECTIONS.
PLEASE DO *NOT* LEAVE USBBS UPDATES OR MESSAGES CONCERNING
USBBS ON THAT BOARD.

I wish to thank Bob Blacher for his years of service to the
maintenance of the USBBS list. His efforts have been a
primary contributor to the accuracy of this list. Computer
Connections is an excellent BBS thanks to the same dedication
to quality by its sysop. If you choose to call boards
nationally, this is DEFINITELY a board to have on your list!
